Applying to study Modern Languages at Oxford, Cambridge or another highly selective university requires more than excellent examination results. Students need to demonstrate intellectual curiosity, linguistic confidence and, above all, an ability to engage thoughtfully with unfamiliar ideas.

Individual preparation built around the student

There is no single formula for a successful Modern Languages application. Preparation is therefore tailored to the student's existing experience, interests, language combination and choice of university.

Sessions can include:

• discussion of literary, cultural and linguistic topics beyond the school curriculum

• developing analytical responses to unfamiliar texts and ideas

• practising discussion and responding to unpredictable questions

• exploring wider reading and independent academic interests

• strengthening advanced spoken French or Spanish

• developing confidence in explaining and defending an interpretation

• preparation for the transition from sixth-form language learning to university-level study

The aim is not to provide students with prepared answers, but to help them become more confident, independent and intellectually flexible linguists.

Interview preparation

University interviews can require students to think aloud, reconsider an initial interpretation and respond to questions they could not have predicted.

​

For Modern Languages applicants, this may also involve moving between linguistic ability and academic discussion.

Individual interview practice therefore focuses on the process of thinking and responding, rather than rehearsing a bank of answers.

​

Students practise listening carefully to questions, developing an argument, supporting their ideas with evidence and responding constructively when their assumptions are challenged.

​

Working with a tutor outside school can be particularly valuable here: students encounter a different interlocutor, different questioning styles and genuinely unfamiliar follow-up questions.

French & Spanish

For students applying with French or Spanish, sessions can combine advanced language work with the broader academic preparation expected of prospective Modern Languages students.

​

Depending on the student, this might involve discussion of a literary text, film, cultural issue or current topic; analysis of an unfamiliar extract; or sustained conversation in the target language.

​

Accuracy remains important, but the emphasis increasingly moves towards using language as a means of thinking, analysing and communicating sophisticated ideas.

​

Applications involving an ab initio language

Many Modern Languages degrees allow students to begin a new language from scratch alongside a language they have already studied.

​

For applicants considering an ab initio language, preparation can explore their motivation for the new language and culture, how it complements their existing linguistic interests, and the academic demands of beginning a language intensively at university.

​

As someone who has studied multiple languages beyond French and Spanish - including German, Italian, Russian, and Bulgarian - I am particularly interested in helping students develop the curiosity, habits and confidence required to become successful independent language learners.

Wider university preparation

Not every ambitious linguist is applying to Oxford or Cambridge.

​
